Tamworth Castles Best Ever Players

I have got a suggestion. Just read about the History of Tamworth Castle and noticed its our 10th Season. Out of those 10 seasons who would you class as the best players to ever play for us in both 1st team and reserves?
Thinking about it, we have had some really good players Very Happy
Tommo

Whats up with you Slim, no insults today, have you taken some happy pills or did someone talk to you last week? And are you one of the greats that should be considered?
John Joe

JJ The great

JJ has got 2 be in the top 10 dirty and mardy players . Slimjim we should do a category 4 the worst top ten players you as top kid i know who you are your rubbish
slimjim

Very Happy No im not one of the greats and yes probably would be one of the worse. Anyway answer the question and stop slagging me Crying or Very sad
Tommo

We'll keep having a go at you until you identify yourself, then again when we know who you are we'll probably still have a go Twisted Evil
John Joe

Best players

Come on then slim put your best players down I can't really do it myself I have not been here long enough . Stop crying you big girl !! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

slimjim

Top Players in no order

Tommo - Skill, Good finisher, Brainy player. Arguably the best player in Tamworth history.
Preccy - Skill, Pace, Good finisher, Could become the best player.
Fish - Pace, strength, Tackle, Unplayable on his day.sometimes passing lets him down.
Bobby - on his day was fantastic. Strength in tackle, passing. Discipline bad though
Damian - Clever player, good passer, could finish, Suprisingly very good defender.
Fringey - very similar to Tommo & Damian + great free kicks.
Macca - So much ability, an all rounder.
Jimmy G - Mr reliable. Never in headlines but a player to rely on and the first on team sheet.
Dave - Fast, Good finisher.
Frosty (For being there from the start)
Tommo

Slim obviously knows a bit of Castle history so am more intrigued on who he is? Which Bobby slim, Atkins or Grewcock? By the way flattered to be on your list and yours TD, am compiling mine at moment, might go for a Castle 'legends' as well as there are many stalwarts at the club.

Loving the worst ten TD, Les was class and the lad from Bonds, if its the one who came last year was shocking! Also as i never really played with him i am asking - should Barney be on that list?
TD

Tommo - The clue is in the name mate FLAPPER Barnes!!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Exclamation Exclamation
Tommo

Fair enough mate Embarassed But in my defence there are probably many who could be given the name Flapper and i thought he was called Barney because he was born in the stone ages the same as Frosty was born in the ice age Very Happy
Tommo

Think i know who Slimjim is but he has never been that complimentary about me ever but i am going to investigate further before attempting to reveal him. Knowing Bobby, Damian and Dave (Underwood i think) limits the options of who he is. And before anyone says anything its not me as i would never put Bobby in my top ten unless it was a top ten knockouts list Razz
John Joe

Slimjim is obviously licking some real arse with a comment like that tommo are you sure your not slimjim or slimjims saturday night plaything lol Laughing Shocked Laughing Question
Tommo

How dare you JohnJoe, i feel like storming off after a comment like that.
Pecker

Some people have got a very weird outlook on the top ten players in castle history you are naming people that were playing in div 5 and 6 hardly makes them fantastic players surely you should be looking at longer serving players that have actually achieved something i.e players from the double winning side, glascote nursing cup winners etc so people like grim, bobby, damon etc shouldn't even be considered cause really they weren't the best if people are honest my choice would be in no particular order

Squidge
Tommo
Griff
Fringe
Me
Fish
Shaggy
Macca
Dolan
Precky
Jimmy G

And then there are a few coming into that category now in

Marv
Mike
Colin
John Jo
All quality players that will surely replace some people on the list above in the near future
Tommo

Have picked the ultimate team

GK -Squidge - Best keeper i've ever seen
LB - Nathan - good defender, and can play football at the back
CB - Goughy - natural reader of the game, good on ball
CB - Steve B - best player i've played with, great knowledge
RB - Dolan - football playing full back
RM - Fringy - Football purist, great at dead ball
CM - Shaggy - Dominant player when on form
CM - Jimmy G - after a slow start became Mr Solid and consistency
LM - Griff - All the ability in the world but not always the application
FOR - Fish - Lightning quick and hard to get ball off, could score too
FOR - Tommo - will say myself for the 49 goal season
Manager - Frosty - for being Mr Tamworth Castle

just off the list

TD - Monster tackler and throw ins, would have made list but don't think he's done 90 minutes for 5 years!
Precky - One for the future, needs a couple more years to join the legends
Mike - Same as Precky
Probably others but that'll do for now
slimjim

Really interesting to see peoples picks. Amazing how you all see players differently, but thats good. By the way my name isn't in any of the teams Crying or Very sad I wonder why Laughing
Pecker

cause we dont know who you are slimjim
TD

This is my 9/10th season at the club and have seen many different players come and go (and comeback again Tommo!)

Peter Beardsley was a signed player and therfore one of the greats!
Grim and Dave O'Brian were banging in goals in the early days to lift the club out of those lower leagues and must be thanked for that!

Lets not forget other great players not mentioned who moved on or away but have been fantastic servants to our club thay might not of been around for the silverware but helped build the foundations.

Just think and don't laugh but how many goals did Rich Patterson score from left midfiled that season? Or how good a player was Simon Turner before he knackered his shoulder? Or even Woody? Passed from pillar to post but undoubtably one of our longest standing players who could get a start in most teams in the league!

Happy memories have made me proud to pull on that tangerine shirt most weeks for the last and hopefully the next 10 years.

As a great leader once said " We will fight them on the beaches and we will fight them at Buckingham Road"!
Tommo

I have been with the castle WITHOUT leaving for about the last six years you should be aiming that comment at the likes of Griff now TD, i feel hurt that it is still thrown up and shall now consider leaving the club!! Confused
Pecker

good point TD but would they of still banged the goals in at a higher level i don't think so and the Peter Beardsley comment come on he hasn't even kicked a ball for us
slimjim

TD absolutley spot on mate. Those players may not be classed as the greats of Tamworth Castle by some people, but Bobby, Damon, Simon Turner, Woody, Richy Patterson were all good players in there own right, and won silverware. I think a few of them deserve a little more credit than they are getting. I also think that a couple of those guys could grace our 1st team Smile
TD

Pecker - The whole point being that they helped elevate the club to it's current level!

Tommo - Taxi to Birchmoor?

Slimjim - Perhaps you could buy me a beer at the gentlemans evening tonight and we can discuss the the points we agree on!
Tommo

Birchmoor like me less than you lot so will probably stay now especially as the entertainments evenings are getting more interesting, see you this evening sir! Laughing
FROSTY

The search fo Slim is hotting up and poor old Tommo is now getting paranoid !

Still working on my all time and worst 11

Also how about picking your starting 11 from todays players. Should be interesting to see if you all agree with Toff.
slimjim

Good day ladies n gents...how are we all feeling Embarassed

Anyway Frosty looking forward to seeing your best 11 and as top man I expect to see both sides getting there fair share of players. You dont want to upset TD Twisted Evil
Tommo

The search for slim continues, who is this elusive man or woman Question At least he has given the forum a bit of life. Interesting to see peoples current starting team Frosty as it may upset a few or will people be tactful as we know their identity and keep people sweet. Slim you can be as unsubtle as you like as you are still a mystery Exclamation
FROSTY

Tommo. slims last post was 4.15pm saturday. Me, Precky and Stickman were in the club watching spurs run rings around the villa, so you can finally wipe us off your little list................. Hello Tom !

SLIM JIM

Frosty - To put many rumours to bed, its is not I. I only found out about this forum on Friday and became a member today to join in the fun.

I will shortly post my best 11 and for reference was with/watching Griff and Shaggy play on Saturday.

So i guess the search continues !!!!
s!imjim

Here's a new Topic for ya!!

Worst Howlers of Castle History.

Dave K setting up an equaliser for the opposition in a cup final!.

Garv from 3 yards out at Two Gates!.

Fringey in similar circumstances!.

Dolan Penalty at Coton Green.

Jimbob on sunday against Wood End.

Ben Dyer sent off for calling the ref a "Car Park Attendant" whilst he was wearing a hi vis vest to do a game once!!

Fringey for injury whilst standing on his own doing tricks with the ball on the sideline!

Ant for numerous O.G's!!

Pete Vale for standing and arguing with the rest of his team while play carried on around him (he was in goal at the time!)

Bobby for unpunished forearm smash at the lamb.

Pecker for continual lumber region trouble (pulled arse cheek)

Could go on all day but my shift finishes soon!

Best 11 and Gaffer

After being with the club for nearly all of the years being discussed this is actually quite hard. (Frosty signing 100+ players in two season doesn't help).....

Management Team:

Manager - Steve Boulton - He must take great credit for getting the teams to where we are today.
Assistant Manager - Tofa - You were so close to knicking this from him as im sure trophy wise YOU ARE the most successful Manager and long may that continue....

Keeper:

Macca - This hurts to sit and type this but the bloke is a true great, one of the finest and a real LEG END !!!

Defence:

Right Back - Dolan - When he was slim/fit (about 10 years ago) what a player, good with both feet, strong in the air, always commited - Legend !!!
Left Back - Lee Porter - Simply amazing for a stickman - Legend !!!
Centre Backs - Nath and Rich Davies- Both good footballers whom would grace any side in there prime. Nath too was a natural leader whilst Rich would scare any centre forward shitless. (although in Naths case only usually for a half a game before pulling a muscle in his arse or something) - Legends !!!

Midfield:

Left - Fringe - Absolute quality and in my opinion probably the greatest player to have played for the Castle with a mullet. Great ability and when given that free role he hurts teams - Legend !!!
Right - Gatesy - To be honest could have put him in most positions, the kid has amazing ability and lets just hope he's still young enough to achieve what he should have done 5 years ago - Legend !!!
Centre - Fish - Still doing the business at 45 years old. When he was younger he was EVEN better, a true professional whom loves nothing better that winning a game 11-10. He optimises the modern footballing era where if you look after yourself and dont drink and smoke he'll be playing in his 60's - Legend !!!
Centre: Shaggy - Nails !!! Probably the best midfielder the Castle has ever had - Legend !!!

Forwards:

Tommo - I aint gonna say to much cause he'll just gon one one - But he his without doubt worthy of this place. - Legend !!!
Precky - For one so young this may seem strange to include him but for sheer HEART and DETERMINATION, i dont think we have seen anything like him, He bags his share as well a real FORWARD !!! - Legend !!!

The following would make the Bench and should be held as Legends in there own rights:

Squidge - Big,brave,daft - You got it - A Keeper !
TD - In his day there is no scarer sight in Football - You ask the players he's kicked all over the park in fact there was another one to add to the list of done by TD just yesterday - GREAT TACKLE KID - Legend !!!
Jimmy G - Awesome, should never be overlooked from this squad - Legend.
Garv - Has great ability and when that knees right, he'll be a match for most - Legend !!!
Tommo

Interesting team there Swollen but just to be picky i am going to claim the manager with most trophies accolade as won the league and two Polesworth cups when i was in charge (to be fair though Steve B did most of the ground work for the league and i just finished the job). Toffa's not far behind though as think its two cups (one unfortunately given) and one cup runners up, hopefully though he may take the lead at the end of this season.
slimjim

Well I am really glad I started this thread as its opened up a real debate. A few names have come up a number of times which shows atleast we all agree on some things.

By the way who is this guy trying to impersonate me??

S!im Jim....dont think so!!!
jimslim

yeh i hate people who copy others.
FROSTY

ALL TIME TEAM.......SQUIDGE, SWOLLEN, BOB AITKINS, SHAGGY, STICKMAN, FRINGE, GRIM, GRIFF, FISH, DAVE O'BRIEN, TOMMO... SUBS; MACCA, PRECKY, TOMMY D, MIKE, NATH, GOUGHY.

WORST TEAM........ CRAIG, BULLY, ANDY LIONS, THAT KID FROM BONDS, ALL THREE CHEFS FROM THE CASTLE HOTEL, LES, FRYER, LUKE THE CHEF FROM THE BOOT, THAT BLOKE WHO WENT AND PLAYED FOR HOPWAS AGAINST US WHILE STILL SIGNED FOR US....... SUBS; PIKEY, FLAPPER, MATTY BELL, TOFFA, ME.

TODAYS TOP PICKS........

.................MACCA.......................
.FISH, SHAGGY, JIMMY, STICKMAN.
... TOM M, MIKE, GRIFF, FRINGE.....
...........PRECKY, COLIN..................

.... SUBS; WOODY, TOMMO, JONJOE, GARV, ANT, MOZZA.

TOP ALL TIME MANAGER IS ME. SIMPLY FOR THE FACT THAT IN KEEPING THE CLUB ALIVE WITH THE DREGGS I HAD TO CHOOSE FROM WHEN NO ONE ELSE WANTED TO DO IT. I WAS SUNDAY LEAGUES ANSWER TO BARRY FRY..... I'D SIGN ANYBODY.... NOT THROUGH CHOICE BUT THE FACT THAT WE NEEDED THE SUB MONEY TO STAY ALIVE.

I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO ALTER MY CHOICES AS MY AILING MEMORY LETS ME.
TD

Interesting choices there Frosty. Anymore for anymore?
Tommo

Talk about gutted, subbed Sunday and now don't make Frosty's starting team Sad . Think its time to hang up the boots Exclamation Would like to ask Frosty though, what formation is he playing as he has an abundance of attacking players and only a couple of defenders, and do Fish and Griff count as current players Question
FROSTY

NOW IN ORDER FOR YOU TOMMO......PREM WINNERS WITHOUT A DOUBT.
jimslim

Some odd picks there Frosty in both your teams, can't say i agree with you
Tommo

Still gutted Frosty Crying or Very sad
slimjim

Ok I see that people are picking there greatest XI as a team, where as I picked it as individuals. My picks were mostly forwards, so after much deliberation this is my greatest XI. I have decided for it to be a good mix of 1st Team & Reserve players to be fair. I think these players at there peak would give a very good account. I like to attack so a 3-4-1-2 or a 3-4-3 system

GK - Squidge
CH - Nathan
CH - Simon Turner
CH - Goughy
RM - Fringey
LM - Griff
CM - Fish (captain)
CM - Bobby G
FW - Precky
FW - Damon
FW - Tommo

Subs - Macca, Swollen, Jimmy G, Tommy D, Dave OB

Manager - Frosty

I havent added any of the new lads over the past couple of years even though they could probably make the squad. Obviously stickman, Garv and players like that would arguably make the side, but its easy to forget what some of these players did in the past. They are all multiple trophy winners and a credit to our club.
TD

On a more serious note i am a little surprised that i have made it to the bench of a couple of these sides which have been posted.

Lets look at the reasons why

6"2 and shit in the air.

17 stone and nearly as slow as Dolan.

Only played every other week due to work commitments.

Currently unfit and unable to play full 90 minutes.

Can only just stand on my left foot let alone kick a ball with it.

Good points

Takes a decent thrown in.

Never bottled a tackle in my life.

Good discipline record.

Always back up a team mate.

Never had a mardy if not selected or subbed.

But that's about it. Is that enough to warrant a place on the bench in a team of Castle greats?
If loyalty and commitment are enough to qualify then thats fine.
Tommo

TD didn't realise that me and you had so many similar good points particularly never bottling a tackle and never having a mardy when subbed Exclamation Exclamation
fringe

All time castle XI

GK- PAPER HANDS AND SQUIDGE can't seperate these two so would have to play 45 minutes each.both unbelievable between the sticks
LB- STICKMAN despite being 3 stone wet through good in the air, good in the tackle, good distribution, good all round!
RB- SWOLLEN at his peak(sometime around 1958 i think) the castles best right back
CD- JIMMY G commanding, strong, commited, solid, reliable, very grey on top
CD- NATH when his arse muscles are ok a great ball playing centre half, strong tackler with a fantastic left peg
LM- GRIFF leaves+rejoins club every 5 minutes, can't get him out of bed, always pissed-pure class though!
RM- FRINGE put simply, the greatest player to ever grace a football pitch.taught beckham everything he knows about free-kicks
CM- FISH could run and run and run and run some more oh,could also play a bit as well and scored goals for fun from any posistion
CM- SHAGGY could probably beat a giraffe to a header, great all round game.nearly left out of the starting XI for his shocking hair though
CF- PRECKY getting better and better now a more composed finisher, wins more in the air than he should-phenominal work rate
TOMMO- moans, whinges, throws paddies, whinges some more then puts the ball in the back of the net.the best finisher the castle has seen!

SUBS.
GOUGHY- left out of the starting XI for one reason and one reason only-cricket came first and that is simply WRONG!
DAVE O'BRIEN- the quickest player i've seen in sunday football, always hit the back of the net
DAMO- despite being a fairy in the challenge and injury prone a great ball player who always come up with important goals.
GRIM- a great target man who could also do a job in midfield.100% commited
MARVE- growing in confidence on the pitch making his performances a lot better.should be a clogs winner for many years to come.

NEAR MISSES
T.D.- castle stalwart, rather play with him than against him, awesome tackler(when he gets the ball and not the man)
GARVE- due to injury the castle hasn't seen the best of him but no doubt hugely talented
SI TURNER- before his shoulder injury pretty boy turner was a rock at the back for the castle in the early days
MIKE- not been at the club long enough to earn legend status just yet but a great player despite the size of his rear end.different gravy

does anybody think i've been too modest about myself? should have bigged myself up a bit more i think.
jimslim

all time 11 - these are my own picks as i nearly copied somebody else

macca - big mouth occasionally makes a howler but a great stopper
dolan - if fit would be in first team now
stickman - strong for a skinny lad
jimmy - strong and good in the air
pecker - as dolan
fringe - good passer and striker of ball
mike - quality
shaggy - tireless
fish - never stopped running
precky - quality for his age
tommo - scores and creates goals

not far off the current team, not sure what my current starting team would be will wait for slimjim's and then copy him i think
TD

Gone quiet lads!

Thought with everyone's computers fixed etc there might of been more posts to read through.

Special mention to the Res team who finally clicked after 8 games on sunday and handed out the first of many thumpings this season.
Moved to half way up the league if we win on sunday we could go 8th!!!
Tommo

Your right TD it has gone a bit quiet, we haven't heard from Slimjim for a while either is that because we have outed you Question Anyway i have started two new topics to see if it gets people talking again, one is somewhat inspired by your other alias s!imjim
FROSTY

SLIMJIM gone quiet..... SWOLLEN out of the country..........eeeeerm?
TD

SIMON TURNER.

One of the original hair bear bunch.

Case Closed.

Pikey
Les from the boot
Leslie Louca
His brother Geordie
Adam with the big nose
Luke the lanky barman from the boot

td, thought that was a little bit harsh mate but your entitled to an opinion.
personally i think there has been far worse players than me to ever don the orange strip, although i cant actually remember half of the people that have played for the castle.
you never know i may just make a come back like frosty suggested Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing
TD

In hind sight i do remember a couple of the goals you scored from out on the right, and i want to have a go in your car so i have edited my team accordingly! Click back on page 1 to view.
secret squirrel

really? i cant remeber any of them mate, i only scored a handfull i think. i did have a better record away from the castle unfortunatly, first season at the oak i got top goal scorer from right back!!

players i rember that were really bad are

dave hill
ned
russ (the really smelly wolves fan)
dave (look i can run in a straight line) stagg
louca
gordie
